Survivability Analysis on a Cyber-Physical System

چکیده
A cyber-physical system (CPS) is composed of interdependent physical-resource and cyber-resource networks that are tightly coupled. The malfunction of nodes in a network may trigger failures to the other network and further cause cascading failures, which would potentially lead to the complete collapse of the entire system. The number and communication of operating nodes at stable state are closely related to the initial failure nodes and the topology of the network system. To address this issue, this paper studies the survivability of CPS in the presence of initial failure nodes, proposes (m, k)—survivability, which is defined as the probability that at least k nodes are still working in CPS after m nodes are attacked, and discusses the problem of cascading failure based on reliability (CFR). Further, we propose an algorithm to calculate (m, k)—survivability and find that the minimum survivability of system with regular allocation strategy decreases with k for a fixed m, and the proportion of initial failure node groups that cause the system to completely fragment increases with m. The simulation shows the properties and the result of CFR of the system with 12 nodes.

متن کاملOn Survivability of Mobile Cyber Physical Systems with Intrusion Detection
In this paper we address the survivability issue of amobile cyber physical system (MCPS) comprising sensor-carried human actors, vehicles, or robots assembled together for executing a specific mission in battlefield or emergency response situations. We develop a mathematical model to assess the survivability property of aMCPS subject to energy exhaustion and security failure. Our model-based an...
متن کاملApproaches to Modeling and Simulation for Dynamic, Distributed Cyber-Physical Systems
In this paper we discuss challenges and new directions in modeling and simulation for effects-based what-if and sensitivity analysis of dynamic, distributed cyber-physical systems. We are motivated on one hand by the critical need to reliably understand how mission-critical cyber-physical systems would respond to unanticipated effects, and on the other hand by the technology gap that has preven...
متن کاملRisk Analysis and Probabilistic Survivability Assessment (RAPSA): An Assessment Approach for Power Substation Hardening
1 Portions of this work were funded by grant #60NANB1D0116 from the National Institute of Standards and Technology, U.S. Dept. of Commerce. Abstract In this paper we present a new cyber security assessment approach, which merges Survivability System Analysis (SSA) with Probability Risk Assessment (PRA). The method adds quantitative information to the process oriented SSA method, which assists w...
متن کاملTowards Net-Centric Cyber Survivability for Ballistic Missile Defense
The United States Department of Defense (DoD) is engaged in a mission to unify its software systems towards a “net-centric” vision— where commanders gain advantage by rapidly producing, consuming, and sharing information using service oriented architectures (SOAs). In this paper, we study the cyber survivability of mission-critical net-centric systems, focusing on Ballistic-Missile-Defense (BMD...
